Why can't I uninstall Layar on my Samsung phone?
Layar comes pre-installed on certain Samsung devices, together with other applications that Samsung chose to pre-install on
their devices such as "Maps" and "Calendar." None of these applications can be removed by the user, however nothing obliges you to run these applications.
If you don't use it, Layar does not consume any resources from your phone. Also, it only takes up 3MB of space of your device, out of at least 8GB that you have available. None of these applications will run or consume resources unless the user actively runs them.
To confirm that the app is not running, you can go to Settings > Applications > Running Services and see a list of all your apps that are currently running. If you do see Layar in this list, you can select it and hit "Stop".
Every so often, Samsung may push new versions of its preinstalled apps to users' phones. This action is done by Samsung only; Layar does not have the ability to update itself on any device. It's best for users to accept these updates, so as not to be repeatedly prompted to do so by Samsung.
As a result of the most recent wave of Samsung's automatic updates, some Samsung users may be noticing Layar for the first time on their phone, as we have received questions about this as well. Unfortunately, we have to refer users to Samsung on this issue, as we don't control the firmware on their devices.
We have made a request for Samsung to change its policies for pre-installed apps, but the decision is ultimately up to them.
We're sorry that you're being bothered by these updates, and we do appreciate the feedback. You can best make your voice heard to effect change on these issues by contacting Samsung directly at
