Im Interview mit Pocket-lint nimmt Steve Walker, zuständig für Marketing bei Sony Ericsson, Stellung zu Kritik, die es gerade die letzten Tage wieder vermehrt an Sony Ericsson gab. Die Tatsache, dass die X10 Reihe wohl auf Android 2.1 „hängen bleiben“ wird, könnte eventuell auch dazu geführt haben, dass Sony Ericsson bezüglich des vergangenen Jahres, aber auch des kommenden Jahres, Erklärungsbedarf sieht.
So erzählt Steve Walker z. B..:
“It’s important to remember that 2010 was the first year for mass market Android handsets. Yes there had been one or two things out from HTC previously, but when we started to design our 2010 handsets in 2008, nobody really knew the dynamics of the Android smartphone market or even what the smartphone market was going to be”
“None of us could predict 2 years previously, to what extent users would switch into smartphones. None of us could really predict what would be more important and less important for consumers”.
Dies habe aber dazu geführt, dass man dazugelernt habe und dass man diese Erfahrungen jetzt nutzen könne, um 2011 einen großen Schritt nach vorne zu machen:
“As we do every year, we’ve taken those learnings and applied them to the new products in the new portfolio. We do think we’ve taken a big step forward for 2011”.
Steve Walker sagt einerseits, dass die Hardware nur die zweite Geige spielte (wohl mehr über Software in Bezug auf das UI von Sony Ericsson nachgedacht und geredet wurde), scheint aber auch eingesehen zu haben, dass die Tatsache, dass Updates in Bezug auf Android ein wichtiger Punkt für die User sind, vernachlässigt bzw. nicht gesehen wurde.
“We talked a lot about the platform and the software. The hardware was important but the hardware played second fiddle. What we think is different in 2011 is that consumer attention is swinging back to hardware once more. That’s not to say people aren’t focused on software, but that they are a little more in balance now”.
“Last year we didn’t anticipate the strength of feeling that consumers would have towards the Android release. And again that was a learning experience of the first year of mass market Android smartphones”.
Das Xperia Arc, das gerade auf der CES vorgestellt wurde, läuft beim Verkaufsstart mit der aktuellsten Android Version, dies soll aber nur das erste von vielen Produkten sein, die Sony Ericsson in 2011 herausbringen will.
Dass Sony Ericsson die X10 Reihe nicht als Erfolg verbucht, kann man aus dem letzten Zitat des Pocket-lint Artikels heraushören:
“If we hadn’t done what we did with the X10 and the X10 minis we wouldn’t have been able to do what we’ve done here today”
Alles in allem finde ich Steve Walkers Aussagen nachvollziehbar, aber vor allem finde ich es sympathisch, dass auch mal ein Hersteller öffentlich Stellung zu Punkten nimmt, die ihm selbst wohl nicht „besonders schmecken“ dürften.
Auf das Xperia Arc bin ich auf jeden Fall sehr gespannt.
